How to write? (News, articles, stories)

“A minute observer and listener can do better journalism”

First thing require is to gather information and for this several activities a journalist have to do. You have interviewed all the people involved and observe everything and then you have to write. Now you have pages of your note book in which you have written and highlighted fact and information. You may have something which can help you like internal thought, media, and some from experts.

When should start writing?

“A best building is that which created out of plan”

Do not start until you have plan. Read your note twice and thrice try to understand. First differentiate the information like most important piece and less important. Note down the quotes you want to use. This gathered information is not only important but you have to decide what is more important and what is less important, to establish a hierarchy of pieces of information. And this is the part wher you must think about you audience. “Put yourself under the shoes of your audience” It is not necessarily what interest you most, but what will interest them. It may not be the same thing, like feeling, emotion understanding etc. but it is more important. You could imagine as you are reading and what things audience give joy or entertainment or information.

“A minute observer and listener can do better journalism”

It also depends on the situation, issue, area, and course for whom you are writing. You can assume more knowledge if you are writing for a specialist publication, or a specialist selection of newspaper, magazine or anything.

For examples:
1.      A cricket, football or any game can assume knowledge of the rules of that game.
2.    Any magazine or newspaper assumes the reader knows what a super is.
3.    In educated field it considers the level of the student.

But some specialist publication set out things for education computer and magazine are good example of this. Through the interest of the reader you can assume how to use specific piece of software cannot. So understand the intention of the publication you write for or if you are a freelance you seek to sell it.

What can be background of news?

The background of the area like in which sector and how it is relevant is also suggesting how to write. The vocabulary and phrase should be related with that point for example if you want to write political things than there must be the vocabularies which are contextual because otherwise it may create problem among people. An article writer must have bunch of vocabulary of hybridity life so all can get equal favor to understand or explain.

As a writer with large vocabulary is not giving the sense of impression or attractive because some may misinterpret it or ordinary man can’t get it so it may be the reason of losing audience’s attention. Sometimes familiar words also help to understand in better way.  One thing is they do not use it in regular speech but it damage or insult the reader and may they feel inadequate and that turns them off.

The best writing for popular journalism is hard to do. It is readily understandable, instantly readable and, if it is done well, makes you want to read on. Space is always the most precious commodity in a newspaper. Long words and sentences take up more space. Self-indulgent writing pleases nobody except perhaps the writer.

What are the messages for writing?

Stephen King, who has sold more novels than most, reflected on his craft in On Writing, and drew a similar message: "One of the really bad things you can do to your writing is to dress up the vocabulary, looking for long words because you're maybe a little bit ashamed of your short ones. This is like dressing up a household pet in evening clothes. The pet is embarrassed and the person who committed this act of premeditated cuteness should be even more embarrassed."
So the attractive message in journalistic writing is: Keep it simple and short because of speedy era people do not like to go for hard.
One of the greatest editors and journalists is Harold Evans, who has written one of the best books on journalistic writing, Essential English for Journalists, Editors and Writers. He summed it up thus: "It is not enough to get the news. We must be able to put it across. Meaning must be unmistakable, and it must also be succinct. Readers have not the time and newspapers have not the space for elaborate reiteration. This imposes decisive requirements. In protecting the reader from incomprehension and boredom, the text editor has to insist on language which is specific, emphatic and concise. Every word must be understood by the ordinary reader, every sentence must be clear at one glance, and every story must say something about people. There must never be a doubt about its relevance to our daily life. There must be no abstractions."

Tips for use of language and encouraging reader

The intro

This is about the staring or the opening paragraph. The traditional form of beginning paragraph is still dominant.

There are two related purposes:

1)     To engage the reader instantly and
2)    To summarize

This structure is known as “inverted pyramid”

It was always easier and faster to cut a story from wherever we want to make it short. The best way to cut is from bottom. News article always have to be cut because reporters write them too long and it could not find apace in newspaper.

An article must give the answer of few question:

Why story is being published?

What is the newest, most interesting, most important, most significant, most attention-grabbing aspect of the story?

Its not just the summary of everything but there should contain two or three facts in it. The best intro of anything is to demand for more reading that you read more. The worst will make it likely that you will move on.

As Tony Harcup puts it in his Journalism, Principles and Practice: "The intro is crucial because it sets the tone for what follows. A poorly written intro might confuse, mislead or simply bore the reader - a well-written intro will encourage the reader to stay with you on the strength of the information and angle you have started with."

How to finish rest of the story or article?

Now you got the intro so after this there will be second important paragraph that you are going to write. Reader got key ideas and passing through it they will hold your story until the end. You have already planned structure, hierarchy of information.

After the intro you can add subordinate information, detail and quotes. And doing this entire thing story reads smoothly. News stories are providing information, and there is nothing more frustrating for the reader than finishing a story with unanswered questions still hanging.

Journalism students are taught about the five Ws:
1. Who
2. What
3. When
4. Where and
5. Why

These are a useful tool to check you have covered all the bases or not. This question method all will always apply. It is difficult to depersonalize the self when you read or write but there must look according to mass.

There is always a problem over how much knowledge to assume, particularly with a running story of which today's is another episode. You cannot always start from the beginning for the benefit of reader recently arrived from Mars, but you can include sufficient to ensure it is not meaningless. It is a matter of judgment.

Be Active not passive

Always use active tense in news writing, and particularly in intros. The active tense is immediate react to reader.

Be Positive even if it is negative

If it is negative yet use positive sense otherwise It will gives negative impact to reader. News is more engaging if it describes something that is happening, rather than something that is not.
Foe Example:

Not: "The government has decided not to introduce the planned tax increase on petrol and diesel this autumn." But: "The government has abandoned plans to raise fuel taxes this autumn."

Which type of quotes should use?
Long quotes make story hard to understand so the quotes should be direct, short, and simple. Journalists paraphrase speeches and reports to focus on the main points, and to make them shorter and more comprehensible. It is also there like people uses indirect quotes to understand in better way. Quotes can add different tone, voice, emotion and feelings.
Quotes can make from the event or the sentence used by people or the natural or current languages. Never use past word like “said”.
Officials
Rough or the particular regional language may trouble to reader because words and meanings are contextual or relational. If the letter is from bank manager, council officers then there should be official language.

Acronyms

Because of ver limited space people ar using Achronyms but sometime reader are not aware of this there shoud be expalanation
What do the following acronyms stand for? If you don't know instantly, then you can be sure there will be plenty of readers who don't.
Acronyms: OECD, SEO; CBI; ISA; Fifa; PCT

Answers:
OECD: Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development
SEO: Search Engine Optimisation
CBI: Confederation of British Industry
ISA:  Individual Savings Account
Fifa: Fédération Internationale de Football Association

Conclusion

Things should be clear if you want to be a successful journalist. There are many works for journalist to publish something. A small mistake can be problematic for his/her job so he/she must take care of language, pattern of article, story or news. It is not just summary you have to provide but beyond it they have to do like collect the information, differentiate it, Arrange in chronological way. They should be aware of ancient issue as well as present because it will help you to connect the dot. Every time they have to take care of how, where, when, who is doing? To be a better journalist first thing need is to be good listener, good observer.

Lord Voldemort’s quest for power in “Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows”.

Brief overview of the novels

Harry Potter is a series of seven fantasy novels written by British writer J. K. Rowling. The novel is revolving around the character of protagonist Harry Potter and his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. They are students of Hogwart (a magical school). Harry is an orphan child living with maternal aunt. There is a mythical story behind Harry that he born to kill Voldemort as Hindu God, Lord Rama and Lord Krishna born to destroy such evil things from the world. There are rules in the school and Harry is a rule broker still he wasn’t got any punishment and considered good fellow. Hermione is innocent, clever & beautiful girl. She should be protagonist but it is anti-feminist text so power goes to male character rather than female. Ron Weasley is also helping character with his magic car to Harry. Throughout the novel he is a fearful character and jealousy of Harry in study and getting love from his mother. There are different blood relation are too presented. Such things are repeating but the power goes to different people in different situation so it seems J. K. Rowling has provided equal opportunity to all characters and therefore it is enjoying by spectator. Every part starts with home that student going to Hogwarts for studying and at the end they are returning to home. Fight between Voldemort and Harry is main thing which enhancing the plot of the novel. Whenever Voldemort tries to kill Harry, his mother’s invisible power, sacrifice and love stand to keep safe to Harry.

This text put under the category of children’s literature but it seems surreal that children are innocent and won’t have enough understanding to come out of difficult situation. This also falls under speculative literature which includes genres, alternative history, fantasy, horror, fiction, magic realism, science fantasy and science fiction. The magical world is imaginative and can’t go further until we do not clear background. It also makes confuse to audience.

Power structure is constantly transforming from one to another and that’s how space is given to every individual character. Hierarchical structure of school seems reality which constructed through power. It gives the idea of ideal prison (ISA – Ideological State Apparatus). Magic is power to create fear or prohibition among character.

Name of novels:

Lord Voldemort’s quest for power
Lord Voldemort is a fictional character created by J. K. Rowling in Harry Potter series. He was a half-blood wizard who was considered to have been the most powerful and dangerous Dark wizard of all time. He is a leader of ‘death eaters’, a group of evil. He first appeared in the first part “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” and at the last time in the last part “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”. In between he appeared in flashback. J. K. Rowling shows in the beginning that he killed Harry Potter’s parents, Lily and James and wants to kill Harry also. He has tremendous power. He divided his soul in seven Horcruxes therefore without destroying Horcrux Voldemort can’t kill.

Seven Horcruxes:

1).Book
2).Dumbledore’s Ring
3).Locate
4). Hufflepuff's cup
5).Diadem
6).Nagini
7).Harry potter (his soul)

Afterwards Tom Marvolo Riddle, manifestation of Voldemort visible in second part. The book harry crushed is one of the Horcrux of Voldemort. His real power shown in 6th part that he takes revenge with his father and grandparents for abandon him. Dumbledore told him that he is a wizard and taking sadistic pleasure with people.

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Voldemort furthers his quest for ultimate power is visible. He is searching a powerful wand to kill Harry. Later on he found that Harry and his friends are hunting and destroying his Horcroxes. Voldemort uses Harry’s blood to resurrect himself. Harry’s blood is runs through Voldemort’s veins so Harry cannot be killed as his mother’s protection lives in Voldemort’ body too. Instead Voldemort destroy the part of his own soul resides in Harry’s body.

Harry reveals about Elder wand that Draco becomes true master of the Elder Wand when he disarmed Dumbledore.

Everyone is greedy for power and want become immortal. To sustain forever Voldemort divided his Horcruxes into seven parts which makes him to alive. He is an antagonist or writer can play on him as to keep control on him. I think his is a most powerful character in the novel but without making his as an evil hero, Harry Potter can’t symbolize a superman.

In the first part Harry tempted by Voldemort that you will get your parents back if he give stone to Voldemort. Harry was happy and thinks to give him but suddenly his parents appeared and advised he lies, don't give him. Voldemort find out Harry will not give so he physically starts attack on Harry. Through his magic Harry defeated Voldemort.

Experiment with the narrative:

J. K. Rowling describes two opposite side like, day and night, good and evil. Good qualities symbolize by Harry whereas bad goes to Voldemort. Harry is orphan innocent and ordinary child yet he is only capable to kill Voldemort. Voldemort divided his soul in Horcrux and powerful than anyone and then he has to die because good wins over evil. Somewhere both have evil power like habit to talk with snake. Voldemort is powerful but evil so he won't get proper space as Harry. Whoever win but everybody must struggle to raise level. Harry is hero can't anyone image that he will die because only evil things are exist for destroying or good for preserve. Evil can also win but it is not a cup of tea of their hand so writer is playing with them.

Voldemort has fear of death so he says to Dumbledore;
Voldemort: "There is nothing worse than death, Dumbledore!"
Albus Dumbledore: "You are quite wrong. Indeed, your failure to understand that there are things much worse than death has always been your greatest weakness."

Power of Voldemort:

Without any comparison we can't understand the powerful or weak personality of something.

For Example:

Day                  Night
White               Black
Girl                   Boy
Protagonist       Antagonist

To know the power of antagonist we must put protagonist to opposite. Generally protagonist are powerful then antagonist but here antagonist, Voldemort is powerful than Protagonist, Harry.

Even any witch or wizard dares not utter his unmentionable name, and refers to him instead with such expressions as "You-Know-Who", "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" or "the Dark Lord".

Witch and wizard have fear about Voldemort so they rarely utter Voldemort's name. Voldemort is aware about these all things but ultimately he wants immortality. If he thinks to rule over Hogwarts he can but he just wants to kill Harry. Harry also afraid of Voldemort's power but he is supported by supernatural power like his mother, professor Dumbledore and Hagrid.

Horace Slughorn view on Voldemort about how he is powerful

"When I first met young Mr. Riddle, he was a quiet albeit brilliant boy, committed to becoming a first rate wizard. Not unlike others I've known. Not unlike yourself. If the monster existed it was buried deep within."
—Horace Slughorn to Harry Potter about his first experiences with Tom Riddle

He was too aware about his power yet he has fear of losing his self. He is Lord of evil and has each kind of skill to show his power to other.

"I can make things move without touching them. I can make animals do what I want without training them. I can make bad things happen to people who are mean to me. I can make them hurt if I want to...I can speak to snakes too. They find me, they whisper to me. "
—Tom Riddle to Albus Dumbledore about the things he can do.

He can do anything yet he mere a wooden toy because of writer. He is not aware that weather he will raise his level or not but he keeps fighting and loses his confidence at the end. He thinks that whatever he is doing is with contemplate so the result will be good as he will win fight and will be immortal.

Voldemort's character is merely to Abhimaniu of Mahabharata. Abhaimaniu can't kill if that thread is at his hand. Krishna disguise in rat and break it so he die otherwise there is no such power which can destroy him that same seems in “Harry Potter” as to destroy Voldemort first need to crush six Horcruxes. Harry is one of Horcrux so first he must die and then Voldemort can kill. When die or fainted down his soul met with Dumbledore and he gave choice that you want to die or fight. Than he chooses fight and again came back.

When Harry die at first time Voldemort was happy as he won world war. He thinks he will be mortal. Only he is happy it indicates his power towards his self. Again when Harry came back they start fighting and at the end he killed by Harry.
Dumbledore aware about every things and he suggested Harry and that’s how Voldemort killed.

Througoht the novel it is not just talking about physical power but the power of magic or memory is represented. Memory of magic like how much people can remember and apply when the time comes.

If I talk about physical strength then Voldemort is elder and strong by body and as opposite Harry is a child and not capable to destroy Voldemort. J. K. Rowling shows the ultimate power of human beings.

“Only the wand can make them alive and destroy”

Voldemort starts searching powerful wand. He thinks that it was the wand of Professor Snap who first attacked so he killed him and grab that wand. In reality Draco first attacked which is fare ahead of Voldemort's guess. Harry knows about this so he got the power of Dumbledore through this wand and successfully killed him.
When Harry went to know the mystery of wand he got this type of idea that how wand works differently.

“The wand chooses the wizard,” said Ollivander. “That much has always been clear to those of us who have studied wand lore”.

“A person can still use a wand that hasn’t chosen them, though?” asked Harry.

“Oh yes, if you are any wizard at all you will be able to channel your magic through almost any instrument. The best results, however, must always come where there is the strongest affinity between wizard and wand. These connections are complex.”
— Deathly Hallows, chapter 24 (The Wandmaker) Ollivander

Conclusion

As above whole describe that Voldemort is powerful without power means he has power of strength, mind and everything yet he can't win. He has quest to become an immortal is seems everywhere. He attempted ever attempt to kill Harry but here happen as Bollywood film that hero never dies. Even if he killed than again however came back same Harry got chance to live and fight with Voldemort. Doubt Voldemort is evil but everyone can raise their level to come out of such situation. As everybody has quest to live same Voldemort had and if the things like sacrifice than who will look at good or bad.

Assignment on Critical analysis of Things Fall Apart

Things Fall Apart is a post-colonial novel written by Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe in 1958. He is a novelist, essayist, poet, short story writer and children’s writer. The title of the novel is taken from Second coming by W. B. Yeats. This novel provides history of time when crisis and anxiety was prevalent. Achebe traces on life in the Igbo village of Umuofia in Nigeria. She presented African culture with the help of limited character which covers whole Africa. People are suppressed and oppress by colonialist. They are living in worth condition and even you won’t see the survival of woman (that type of condition of women) in Africa. Througoht the novel people are struggling with own people as well as colonialist.

Many novels, poems, articles, and such things are written before this novel, for example Heart of Darkness, it shows the hugely face of African black people. Colonialist or especially European see them as they are born to treat African. African people are mere an object or the worst animal of the world according to colonialist. It indicates pre and post-colonial time. This is a first novel by African novelist catch up the eyes of the world.

The novel is split into three parts:

1)     Okonkwo’s family and personal history, the custom and society of the Igbo

2)   & 3) Describing the influence of British colonialism and Christian missionaries on the Igbo community.

Narrative technique

The language of the novel is simple but dignified. He used elevated language to provide the real image of Igbo culture. His first sentence has a mere 11 words and goes as follows 'Okonkwo was well known throughout the nine villages and even beyond'. Within these short sentences, Achebe explains an incredible amount of information required to understand the text. His simple language gives the voice to native people of Africa as they himself are speaking and it was his desire to make sound like Igbo uses. The images that are used are entire Igbo community.

Achebe uses third person narrative like he or she to show the concern of language and it also suggest that character are interact each other and tell their own words from their perspective. Anothere interesting thing is past narration which tells that things are happened and it will may happen in future so it challenge the people of Europe.

Another aspect is as the story enriches character becoming dark and violent. First story begins with Okonkow’s point of view but letter on it shift on past and present condition of Africa.

Okonkwo, throughout his life he struggle for his community as well as for himself to become successful, powerful or the lord of Igbo. His violence hatred becomes one of reason for his failure. For Okonkwo, the conflict between private self and public man is the conflict between the feminine and masculine principles.

This novel revolves around violence, hatred, generation gap, two different cultures; language is a sign of different culture etc. Finally, the point of view shifts to the District Commissioner's perspective, and it is his perspective that closes the novel, perhaps mirroring the way that traditional cultural values and power were displaced by European colonialism. Read from 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

Reflections on Post-Colonialism

Post colonialism means after colonialism o after independence or it express opposite idea of colonialism. Post colonialism is a consequence of colonialism. Through the novel “The Things Fall Apart” Achebe focused on colonialism in which he grew up. It makes her to write and educate the people of Africa. Achebe writes back at the writing of European writers and the misrepresentation of Africa in their writing. Post-colonial writers usually write about how their rich culture destroyed under the power of imperialism.
If both writer work together and put their difference aside they surely bound to overcome the pain of losing their culture. However, the literature does not show the colonized as victims of colonialism, but rather it shows that they are confused about their sense of belonging. Most colonized individuals do not know whether to follow their own culture or the culture of colonizes. In the two cultures they are struggling for their identity. Read from  1, 2

Generation gap

Dirty picture of old generation represent illiteracy of back generation. Newer is always smarter than older one” because older are investing and new are completing remaining things with new idea. Here same protagonist Okonkwo’s father Unoka is lazy and wasteful man. He wants to be a traditional and his son also follows his way of living life instead of being missionaries. He doesn’t see the failure of himself. He was borrowing money from others and merry making with the friends and his family as children and wife are suffering from starvations. He doesn’t mind with that all. He gives more important to his land so he tells his son to work in land but Okonkwo is clever and understands the colonialism from which they are suffering so he wants to be an ideal man.
Because Okonkwo is a leader of his community he is asked to take care for a young boy named Ikemefuna, who is given to the village as a peace offering by neighboring Mbaino to avoid war with Umuofia. Ikmefuna and Okonkwo’s son Nwoye is friend. These two are representing another generation. They are children so they constructed or suppress by parents and want have choice. Okonkwo is not happy with father and son because son is not exact image of himself and his daughter is his image but he wants her as son rather than girl. Achebe looked Africa from inside.

He loves Ikemefuna more than Nwoye. Once community forced to kill Ikemefuna so Okonkwo took him outside the village and kill him. He was upset and unable to sleep for few days but he didn’t realize to other. Nwoye has Christian name and use to visit church which gives pain to Okonkwo. Out of frustration he starts beating his wife. He has three wives which show his richness.

No doubt he is a worrier of the land but he uses his power in home also so it provokes domestic violence. Through beating children and wife he is showing his individual’s authority in home as well as in community. He lives for community rather than family or individual.

The struggle between change and tradition (clash of culture)

As the novel is on culture on the verge of change than there definatly two culture which defines differently. It can also say that fight or conflict between colonialism and traditional societies. The tension about whether change should be privilege over tradition or it shoud be goes onwards. To some extent, Okonkwo’s resistance of cultural change is also due to his fear of losing societal status. His self-appreciation depend on the cultural effect because if British start over powering African than it is possibility of losing culture. As colonizers believe that African have no value no power than how can they give high status to Okonkwo.

The struggle of the hero, Okonkwo indicates importance of his own culture in front of British. His fight with the culture is mere the fight with his life
This system of evaluating the self inspires many of the clan’s outcasts to embrace Christianity. Okonwo’s son Nwoye wants to accept Christianity and Christian stand for Europeans. Nwoye and many of the villagers are excited about the new opportunities and techniques that the missionaries bring.
This European influence, however, threatens to extinguish the need for the mastery of traditional methods of farming, harvesting, building, and cooking. These traditional methods, once crucial for survival, are now, to varying degrees, dispensable. Throughout the novel, Achebe shows how dependent such traditions are upon storytelling and language and thus how quickly the abandonment of the Igbo language for English could lead to the eradication of these traditions.

Condition of women (gender discrimination)

Women are mere an object in male dominate community. Igbo community also gives important to male. Majority people have two or more wife so they think women are mere a key toy. Women are the object which shows the richness of any men. Women are exploiting by man.  If any woman try to raise her voice than it won’t seem fare and people start abuse or torture to her so automatically she will lose her everything.

They won’t have choice and that’s why they are suffering. Okonkwo has a daughter named Ezinma. She is intellectual and real image of him but he wants every quality of that girl in his son so he can feel better. Achebe criticize that this is not the real power of any human of the word to beat his wife or to keep wife under his control.  He also talks about the mind power which is in limitation. People are living in a frame and that frame is decorated by such duplicate row materials so it ever changing. Ezinma harassed by her in lows so she comes back to home but her husband want her back.

Okonkow suffering from frustration and that’s why he started rudely behave with his wives. He realizes the loosing of power therefore he believes getting power by suppressing women. Women have to live under the home and it is the world for them. How can women get views to raise her voice because they are in a box which never opens for them and if open than it is in limitation. Read from 1, 2, 3, 4.

Religion

Religion plays vital role in this novel. First we need to understand the meaning of religion because it can interpret in various ways. For Okonkwo religion is to beat children and wives. Whatever he is doing for his self or for community is his religion. Women have to live in home and do household that is her religion.
Christian is real religion in the novel. It gives the glimpse of post colonialism because it relates with Europe and European are considering colonizer. People have conflict between two religion one is own and another one is Christian. Nwoye like to convert his religion as Christian but his father stick to his own. Nwoye changed his name in Christian and visiting Church which his father dislikes. Read from 1, 2.

Conclusion

To summing up we can say that Achebe’s intention of writing this novel is to differentiate the things which are spread in Africa. How British are came and start ruling over Africa. He want to make realize to African that because of imperialism and colonialism how their culture is downfallen. Tut newer is satisfied here is not any rich culture but the people are constructing it rich. Older generation was rigid but new one is satisfied with new rules and regulation so it is the reason of destroying their culture. The condition of women is unimaginable because of masculine power over women. Okonkwo and his father’ Unoka is the example of masculine power. They are treating their wife as an object. Okonkwo has a beautiful and clever daughter with his all quality but he prefer boy child more than girl so he thinks that she must be boy instead of girl. Finally he covers worldwide attention that black or African is not always violet but it is white who make them to evoke.
